A03: Bird's Opening
Kingston 3 v Guildford 4, Surrey League Division 4 (Centenary Trophy).
Time control: G75 +10s
1.f4
Bird's Opening named after 19th century player Henry Bird (1829-1908).
1…d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d3 e6 4.Nbd2 c5 5.g3 Nc6 6.Bg2 Bd6 7.O-O O-O 8.b3 e5
Fritz 15 prefers the immediate 8…Ng4 here, but I take the opportunity to open up the
position.
9.fxe5 Nxe5 10.Bb2 Neg4 11.Qc1 Ne3 12.Re1 Nxg2
I thought this was worth playing as Black (apparently) becomes weak on the white
squares although it doesn't appear in Fritz's top 5 moves.
13.Kxg2 Re8 14.Nf1 h6 15.c4 d4 16.e3 dxe3 17.Nxe3 Ng4 18.Qc3 f6 19.Nxg4 Bxg4 20.d4
Qd7 21.Ng1 cxd4 22.Qxd4 Qc6+ 23.Kf1
White would have avoided a lot of trouble if he had played Qd5+ here.
23...Be6 24.Qd3
Black hasn't been playing the best defensive moves and after this he is definitely losing.
24...Bc5 25.Re2 Bh3+ 26.Ke1
If Nxh3 here, 26…Qh1+ Ng8 27. Qxg8 mate.
26...Bxg1 27.Rxe8+ Rxe8+ 28.Kd2 Bc5
Friz points out that …Qg2+ is best, but I saw the Black king sheltering on c3 (I missed …Re3)
so I retreated the bishop with the intention of stopping black moving to c3.
29.Rd1 Bg4 30.Rb1 Bb4+ 31.Bc3 Qg2+ 32.Kc1 Bxc3 33.Qxc3 Re2
Now it's mate in 2 whatever Black does so Black resigns.
